Spotlight: Augustine of Hippo

Augustine is a giant in the church. One of the clearest voices to come from the early years. His honesty and clarity in writing have made his books remain in circulation for the last 1600 years. If you can read one of his books, start with his autobiography entitled “Confessions”. It is a classic that details his spiritual journey from a delinquent to a saint. His apologetic work “The City of God” details the foundations of the Christian faith and its effect on society, it is still applicable even after 16 centuries! He was a champion of the faith that serves as an example of the power that is generated in a life when the grace of God is combined with the relentless effort of a man.

A Few of Augustine’s Most Famous Quotes:

Take care of your body as if you were going to live forever; and take care of your soul as if you were going to die tomorrow.

Because God has made us for Himself, our hearts are restless until they rest in Him.

There is no saint without a past, no sinner without a future.

A Christian is: a mind through which Christ thinks, a heart through which Christ loves, a voice through which Christ speaks, and a hand through which Christ helps.
